It’s so fun to have clients who are so easy to talk to, and so fun to be around. Jenifer is one of those clients. Our session went so smoothly, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s not often that I get to photograph a scientist who is getting an advanced degree in something that I could never remember if I tried. She has such an amazing smile, and dresses with such great style.

When I was about 8 or 9 years old I visited my aunt Sherrie’s house. She just purchased a brand new swing set for her son, and of course we couldn’t wait to try it out. It was huge like the ones they had at the park, not the old rickety metal ones some of my friends had. Oh how I loved those monkey bars, swings, and various contraptions that kept us busy for hours, but my favorite part was the glider that could go so high it felt like I was flying. We all loved that glider, and had to take turns because we all wanted to be on there at the same time. I was so jealous of my cousin for having it in his yard to play with anytime he wanted.
About 8 years later we found ourselves living in another state, and my aunt wanted to get rid of that amazing swing set. Her son had grown out of it, and she was tired of it in her yard. My mother had 6 children, and I’m pretty sure she loved that swing set more than any of us kids. She was able to get it shipped to us, and my Dad put it together in our yard. Of course by then I was a teenager and not at all interested in playing on it like my younger brothers and sisters. Well, that swing set is still there today in my parent’s backyard. Sure the swing seats have been replaced a few times, along with the chains, and a few other minor repairs, but my children along with the other 11 grandchildren go to it immediately when they arrive at my parent’s house. My oldest always makes sure she is not wearing a dress so she can hang upside down, and do all sorts of things on the bars there. She absolutely loves it. Sadly, the glider broke, but my parents have consulted with a welder to have it fixed. My mom is not ready to part with her baby yet. We have a lot of fun memories out in the backyard, and lots and lots of pictures to go with it. In the above picture are my sister (hiding behind her son) and her children. You would be amazed at the tricks they do on those bars.

Those of you who know me well know that I like to be behind the scenes. I am not the one to be the life of the party or the center of attention. To be honest I am terrified of being the center of attention. When a large group of people are looking at me I can feel my cheeks get hot, and I know they are getting bright red at that very moment. Sure enough someone says, “She’s blushing!” and of course I get even more embarrassed, my cheeks turn to purple, and I freeze up and can’t say anything that makes sense.
When Tim, my husband suggested I start a photography business I immediately said no. There was no way I was going to be able to put myself out there, and be someone people actually paid to take their picture. I was way too shy and reserved for that. I knew for sure people would hate my pictures and never want to hire me. Then I would just look like a fool who was pretending to be a photographer. After months and months of pushing me, and convincing me I could do it I agreed. As I got my portfolio together I started to get excited. Maybe this was something I could do, and have a lot of fun doing. When the time came to actually let everyone I knew know I was doing this I got that horrible feeling again. I wasn’t sure of myself, and was afraid of making a fool of myself. I knew I would be the center of attention and it scared me to death.
I was so lucky to have such a supportive group of family and friends who referred me to all of their friends and coworkers, and before I knew it my weekends were full of photo sessions, and I was actually getting paid to do what I loved. My confidence has grown tremendously since those first frightful photo sessions, but as my business grows, and I do more things to promote it I can’t help but have that scared feeling over and over again.
If you notice on the top menu there is a “links” button. It is where you can get links to my website, my old blog, and now my Twitter and Facebook links. I resisted doing these because I didn’t think anyone would care about what I was up to, but I’ve found through my limited experience on these sites that I have met some great people, and have made some really good connections. I am hoping all my clients will follow me, and have access to more timely news of promotions and sales. This summer as I get larger and larger with my pregnancy I am going to be doing mini sessions at reduced prices, as well as offering freebies with booked sessions. Another incentive for my clients to add me on Facebook is that I will load 4 web-sized photos for you to use on your own account.

Monday nights at my house are family nights. It’s a time for us to discuss any family plans we have, make goals, have a brief church lesson, sing songs, and play games together. This past Monday night I was so excited about the fantastic new camera I got for Mother’s day, so we went in the backyard with a tripod and attempted some family photos. I really want to hire a professional photographer after the baby is born, but this was just all of us together on a typical Monday night with no thought for wardrobe, hair or make-up. I find myself too often staying behind the camera, and I think I might regret not being in front of it more with the people that I love. I want my kids to know I existed in a place other than their memories. They don’t care how old, fat, or ugly I look. I’m the only one worried about that stuff. I encourage you all to get out from behind the camera and be in front of it. Don’t worry about looking perfect. If you’re like me that time will never come. Enjoy life just as you are right now.

Maternity to Baby AlbumMay 12th, 2009I’ve been working on a Coffee Table album for a fabulous couple turned family of 3. I had a maternity session with Michael and Janice, and a couple of months later went back to see their beautiful newborn daughter. Here are a few pages from their album. |
Around the HouseMay 8th, 2009I am always open to some extra help in the kitchen, and believe it or not my kids love emptying the silverware from the dishwasher. I’m taking advantage of it because I know it won’t last long. |
Storyboard CollageMay 7th, 2009I would say 95% of my clients end up ordering one of these 20×20″ or 10×20″ storyboard collages. Most of the time I prefer these storyboards in black and white, but this one just has to be in color. Oh how I love all these bright colors, and the huge smiles and joy on their faces. It just makes me happy, and reminds me once again that I LOVE what I do!

Here are a couple more that I had on my computer (in black and white).
