Last year was my first year participating in the worldwide Giving is Awesome movement. I was able to meet and photograph the Kent family during their first ever trip to the beach. This year I am excited to do it again. I would like to do my small part to make a deserving family happy, especially at this time of year. Here are the details:

Think of someone you know who has experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is dealing with an illness, or is selflessly volunteering to help others.  The person should not be able to afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season. Surely you know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family’s spirit, love, and beauty.

You know someone. I guarantee it.

I want to know who they are, and I want to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography — $1025 worth, to be exact. It’s in your power to give them the artwork they deserve this holiday season.

Oh, and the best part? The person who nominates the winner receives a $175 session fee credit. What better reason to show some love could there possibly be?

The rules:

* You cannot nominate yourself, and the person nominated must sincerely be incapable of purchasing my services. (Being unable to make mortgage payments for a two-million-dollar-vacation-home in Paris does not qualify as sincere financial need.)

* The nominee must reside in Los Angeles or Ventura County. Tell me who you know, what they’re experiencing, and why they deserve my artwork. Please include a way to contact both your nominee and yourself as well.

* You must e-mail me the full story: julie@juliecampbellphotography.com

The winner will be announced on Christmas Eve — get nominating! I can’t wait to read all of your entries!

Open your heart to someone this holiday season — and thanks for giving me the opportunity to open mine.

Another Thanksgiving has come, and is now over. We love Thanksgiving here. We decorate the house with turkeys, pumpkins, scarecrows, and fall leaves. Tim’s parents had us over for a fantastic dinner at their house.  His mom is an amazing cook who somehow is able to get everything perfect. We contributed by making our favorite rolls using my Granny’s famous recipe. We also made lots and lots of pies because Tim can’t get enough of them, and now the kids have discovered the joy of pie. This year Emma helped me out in the kitchen. She has become quite a good cook. I’m looking forward to the day she can take over and do all of the cooking for the family. I can dream can’t I?

Every year we write down what each of us is thankful for. It is so fun to go back and read what we’ve said in year’s past. Last year we were thankful that Noah joined our family. Sophie was thankful for her dress up clothes, and Ben was thankful his Mom was a good baker (poor child doesn’t know the difference).  Last year I wrote how thankful I was that my sisters both moved within a mile of where I live. Those two have been an unbelievable blessing in my life this year. I cannot ever imagine them living far away again. They are not only my sisters, but my best friends, my shoulder to cry on, and the first ones I call when I have good news. Because of them I want my children to be best friends. I want them to have what I have.  Just as one of my children wrote on our list of things we are thankful for, I am also thankful that our family can be together forever. After all, does anything else really matter in the long run?

For the past 2 months something was wrong with my baby.  He was incredibly miserable. He cried most of the day, and insisted on being held. When he didn’t get his way he would either scream or growl at me. I’ve never seen anything like it. How could my child be so unhappy? I first blamed it on teething, then he was sick, and then I thought it was just his new personality. I took him to the doctor who told me he was fine, but of course I didn’t believe him. I started to become depressed, and very very tired. Every day was difficult to get through with such an unhappy child.

Then one day out of the blue he started to giggle, smile, and play happily. I watched him in amazement. This was the old Noah I used to know, and had missed so much. I still have no idea why he was so miserable for so long, but I’m happy he’s back. We are having so much fun with him. This month he has finally started to show an interest in walking, and he’s starting to talk and do so many fun things. He got his first hair cut, and with it he sadly lost all the red in his hair. I’m going to have to let it grow back out again.

This week he’ll be able to eat his first Thanksgiving dinner. I know he’ll dive into the potatoes first, and then eat a little of everything. I know I’ll be very thankful for my sweet little Noah happy again.

Tis the season for loads of sessions, orders, cards to design, and endless editing. Through it all I still insist on devoting my Sundays to the ones who matter most to me. Today we had a blast going through the neighborhood with our trusty wagon. I showed them how my siblings and I used to take turns steering the wagon from inside while the others pushed us from behind.  I loved being able to steer my moving wagon pretending it was a car.  My kids loved every second of it. Finally, tired and hungry, they all crammed into that little wagon together. As I pulled my load of  kids (and what a load they are!) I thought to myself that I’m the luckiest person alive. I have been blessed beyond all measure to have this family of mine. I am so very thankful.

Apples and Lollipops

November 15th, 2010

We had big plans for this session, but puppies and one year olds don’t follow plans so we followed them. They are cute enough that it doesn’t matter. Tim and I had a lovely afternoon with this family.

Waiting

November 11th, 2010

It was a beautiful afternoon in Santa Barbara when I met up with a wonderful couple ready to welcome their little girl into the world.  I cannot wait to meet her in a few weeks. I just know she will be wonderful just like her mom and dad.

At Home

November 10th, 2010

This session is exactly the kind of session I dream about. These two little girls and their parents are amazing. I loved that they weren’t afraid to laugh, play, dance, and sing. I was able to sit back and observe them doing what they like to do together. It brings a smile to my face.

The Good, the Bad, and the Scary

November 2nd, 2010

Halloween 2010 came and went, and this is what we have to show for it. There was a witch, who insisted her costume have orange in it (thank you Costco). We were protected by a member of the S.W.A.T. team. He was serious about his job…very serious. Then we had a ghost from Harry Potter. [...]

We were protected by a member of the S.W.A.T. team. He was serious about his job…very serious. Then we had a ghost from Harry Potter. She was Hermoine last year, but this year she decided to be one of the ghosts from the story which was inspired by a friend’s idea.

You might notice one child is missing. He was with us the whole time, but I did not get one decent photo of him in his dragon costume because he was miserably sick. My poor baby was crying the ENTIRE weekend non-stop. Today is the first day he has been better in nearly a week. He did not let us put him down or do anything but pay attention to him the whole time. I was really worried something was seriously wrong with him because of the way he was acting. Now that it is passed I am eternally grateful for my children’s health. I am so blessed.
