Today is a big day. It is my 14 year wedding anniversary. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was only 21, but I felt like I knew it all. Some people told me I was too young to get married. They tried to convince me to go out and enjoy life before I got tied down. I didn’t for one minute consider it. I knew exactly what I was doing. I was young and naive. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but I got this one right. I married the right person for me, and not just for a few years, but for eternity.

Tim is my best friend. He’s a pretty amazing husband. Everyone tells me how wonderful he is, and how much they wish their husbands were like him. I think my own mother loves him more than she loves me. My grandmother calls him a gem, a jewel, and a treasure. If you don’t know my grandmother you need to know she is not easy to impress. I’m still trying to win her over. What makes him so wonderful? He goes out of his way every single day to make my life easier. He works hard at his day job, and makes sure he is there for his kids and his wife whenever we need him in a way that is rare among men.

So yes, I made the best decision of my life to marry Tim. In the last 14 years we’ve gone through a lot. I am no longer that naive 21 year old. I’m older, a little more cynical, and definitely wiser. I am so much more aware of what I want my life to be. Luckily Tim is on the same page. We are trying our hardest every single day to raise our 4 children to be good people. It’s never easy, but it’s always worth it. I’m thankful everyday I have Tim to lean on.

The Cronquist Family

At the beginning of the year I made a goal to make my photography more meaningful, and I meant my definition of meaningful. I wanted my clients to be able to look at their photos and see what makes them love their family. I didn’t want to waste the precious time I have with the families that hire me to simply record what their faces look like in a forced smile. I want them to see what they see when I’m not there. I truly believe our families are the most important things in our lives, and capturing them at this moment is truly priceless. We never ever know what will be our future, and what won’t be. We change, our loved ones change.

I challenge all of you whether you are a client, reader, friend, photographer, whatever brought you to this blog to take a picture with your family now. Don’t wait until you lose weight. Don’t wait until you get the perfect wrinkle cream, win the lottery or find the perfect outfit. It doesn’t matter if you hire a professional, set your camera on self timer, or ask your neighbor to take it. Just take one. After you take one print it out, and I promise you will be glad you did. It will become priceless to you.

This was my third time photographing this family. You can see them here and here.  I love them. They are not only beautiful on the outside, but also on the inside. I really really hope they look at these pictures and see how amazing they are, and how important they are to each other. Be sure to scroll down and watch the slideshow.

Family at the Beach

May 19th, 2011

It was early in the morning on a Saturday when I met Editha and her family at the beach. Parenting

I have a confession to make. Sometimes my kids drive me absolutely crazy. It’s not something I’m proud of, but it’s true. They have been known to argue, whine, talk back, ignore me, fight with one another, and make big huge messes. I feel like a nag all afternoon trying to get them to do their homework, practice the piano, and do their chores. By 8:00 at night I am not sad to say goodnight and tuck them into bed. I’m ready for some quiet time. I’m ready for peace.

I’m pretty sure this is normal, but I wish it wasn’t in my house. I’m not sure that what I wish for is even possible, but I know it can be better. It’s amazing to me how different and unique each one is. They all come from the same gene pool, and yet they are all so very different. Their personalities range from super shy to goofy and loud. I have my neat and tidy child, and my child whose room looks like a bomb went off in it. One is extremely affectionate, and needing to be close to others, and one likes much more personal space and alone time. Meeting all their individual needs seems so daunting at times. I get tired of making so many mistakes. Being a mother is just plain hard. Of course I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I love them all deeply, and NEED them in my life, but I do wish it was a little easier sometimes.

Three Generations

I first met Alyson last Fall when I did her family portraits for her Holiday cards.  She contacted me once again for an extended family photo session with her mom and brother’s family.  It was a beautiful night and the wildflowers in Thousand Oaks were just gorgeous. Tim and I were a little bit nervous about a large group with 2 toddlers and a newborn. Luckily Alyson’s family embraced the craziness, and we let the little ones run the show. Along the way I think we got some pretty cute photos.

Trouble

May 10th, 2011

I can’t keep my house clean. I try… sort of. It feels like a losing battle every day. These two are a big reason why. They are best buddies as well as partners in crime.

Matt, Mindy, and Family

She’s is incredibly creative, athletic, and an excellent cook. On top of all of that she’s super nice so you just have to like her. She has 4 kids and I have 4 so photographing their family was a little like seeing my own. The craziness felt like home, and just added to the fun.  Be sure to scroll to the end to see a slideshow of all the photos.

I’m still going strong taking a photo a day every day for a year. These are a few from March and April. Looking back at these I can see my life is a simple one. I don’t do anything big and flashy. I just do my best to raise 4 kids, train a puppy, be a good wife, grow my business, and try, but fail often to keep my house clean.

In the past 2 months I’ve gone on countless walks, spent lots of time bathing and feeding the baby, picked up toys, watched my boy play baseball, watched my nephew play basketball, and went to Disneyland. I took the kids to the park 2 or 3 times a week, took Emma to get her teeth extracted and then get a retainer. I ran a 10K with my sisters and our husbands, went to the zoo, got a new car, went to the beach, colored eggs, and enjoyed egg hunts at Grandma’s house. I watched my boy get 3rd place in the pine wood derby, read love notes from my daughter, tried on hats at Kohls, and enjoyed rainbows on my morning run. Yes, it’s a simple life, but it’s perfect for me.
