Love at the Beach

September 26th, 2011

Decorating with Love

When people come to my house they usually say they thought they would see more photos on the walls. I suffer from a huge case of indecisiveness. I just cannot choose what photos I want to use. What if I take something tomorrow I like better? Then I look at all the technical flaws in my photos and think I can’t possibly hang that up. People will see that huge blown highlight or the excessive grain? It’s a curse I tell you.

I’ve been collecting ideas on Pinterest for how to decorate my home with the photos I love so much. I love the idea of photo galleries. Sometimes it takes more than one image to tell the story. Plus, you can easily switch them out for new ones if you want to.

I love these photo ledges from Pottery Barn.

This nursery is stunning. I’m out of the nursery business myself, but wouldn’t this make an amazing wall for any room?

The extremely talented Kelli France shared this kitchen display. I love it!

This huge canvas caught my eye. I don’t think we think about the  fun and quirky pictures as large canvas worthy, but wouldn’t this be a fun room to eat breakfast in?

This display is simple, but the colors and feel of it just make me happy. It’s unexpected and fun.

I have decided to start small with a new corner of my house each season to focus on. Right now I’m going to work on the wall along the stairs that lead to the second floor. Should I do something like this?

I’m not sure if I’m that quirky. It will more likely look more like this:

or this, but with photographs:

I’ll let you know how it turns out.

There are a few things that I’ve always wanted to do. One of them was to be at a deployed military homecoming. I’ve seen the pictures and video on the news. Everyone bursting with joy and happiness as they welcome their loved one gone for so long. When Janel called asking if I would photograph her husband coming home I jumped at the chance. It was all so new, and so fun to watch as these families gathered for the homecoming. The kids were so excited, the wives were cheering, and the waiting seemed to be killing them all. It was everything I thought it would be and more. I had such a good time putting together these photos for a slideshow. Please don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom and press play. Thank you Janel for letting me be a part of your day. It was a pleasure!

Baby Shane

You may remember this cute family from their maternity session over the summer. Their little bundle of joy arrived safe and sound. When I first saw him he took my breath away. Isn’t he the sweetest, most perfect little baby boy? His older sister and I were able to spend lots of time together while little Shane filled his tummy. She stole my heart. They purchased the Baby Plan, so I get to see them in 6 months when Shane is sitting up. I can’t wait!

What our Spring and Summer Looked Like

I’m still going strong with my photo a day (on my phone), but I haven’t shared any for awhile. Here are some of my favorites from the spring and summer. It’s so fun to look back on my busy days that go by in a blur, and remember what I thought was important enough to get my camera out for. The highlights are that I was spoiled on Mother’s Day, went on my last field trip with my 11 year old (boo hoo), hit up Yo Frutii with my girls, fixed countless meals for my toddler in his high chair, played blocks with the boys, Superman with the toddler, swimming with the girls, watched the sunset at the beach with Tim, went to Cub camp with my 8 year old, bike rides with the kids, and went on trips to Philadelphia, Intercourse, Gettysburg, and Hershey, PA. In Washington D.C. we saw the IRS building, the inside of the Capitol, the White House, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Lincoln Memorial (among other things). We took Molly for walks every day, enjoyed the beautiful dramatic skies that are so rare, visited the LA Temple, saw Les Miserables with my sisters, enjoyed free slurpies on my birthday, and we went to the beach once a week. We dressed Molly up in the pet store, traveled to many photo sessions, rode down to Sycamore Beach with my sisters on our bikes, decorated baseball cupcakes for my now 9 year old, played at the park, spent a day in Pismo, watched my cub scout get his Wolf, traveled to Griffith Observatory, grew sunflowers, and went to visit my newest nephew.

The Grandkids

This morning I was cleaning the floors in my house. It takes hours and hours, and I put it off because, well, I hate to clean. It is my trial in life to have to try to keep my house clean. As I was walking through the newly cleaned wet floors I was reminded of when my mom used to clean her floors. She would wash her entire floor on hands and knees. Mops just swished the dirty water around the floor she would say. Sometimes if we were really lucky she would keep the floor wet long enough for us to slip and slide across the floor a few times before she dried it on hands and knees again. It was the funnest thing ever, especially on cold winter days when we were stuck inside (we lived in Utah at the time).

I remember we always had music on at our house. My mom was a big children’s music fan, and I will never forget the Captain Kangaroo record she played where he said my name in his songs. That was the best thing ever. So, this morning as I was cleaning the floors I opened Spotify and found some of the old Neil Diamond songs my parents always had on. Man, that was good stuff. I can’t believe I haven’t listened to that in years. It brought back so  many memories from my childhood. We had so much fun with each other as kids. Oh I hope my kids have those same kind of memories.

Last July Tim’s sister came to visit from Texas. All of my in-law’s grandchildren were together. They have so much fun together during these summer visits. It’s like they are on a Campbell vacation. This year Tim and I picked all 8 of them up in our 2 cars and took them to a local park for pictures. We didn’t dress them or even do their hair. This is how they were on that day, and I hope these photos will remind them how much fun they had playing, laughing, running, and being LOUD. That’s what being a kid is all about. It’s over much too soon.

Over the summer a large percentage of my clients are vacationing here in Southern California from out of state. This gorgeous family of 5 came from Colorado for a week or so at the beach in Ventura. Tim and I had a great time hanging out with them by the water one evening. It’s so refreshing to have siblings who are so openly loving and sweet to each other. Not only that, but they were tons of fun. They reminded me of me and my sisters.

After they booked the session we learned they used to live on the same street we live now, just a couple of houses down from us. Since then I’ve seen Vera on walks with their dog while we walk ours. It’s a small world, and I love that my clients become more than clients, but also friends.
