You might recognize Sarah’s family from a year ago when I did their family photos. I regularly read her popular blog Becoming Sarah so I have been able to see little Charlotte grow throughout the year. Sarah is an amazing writer, and her stories about Charlotte are my favorite. I meet new children on a daily, if not weekly basis and Charlotte ranks in the top 10% for most intelligent, charming, and downright adorable. Her little voice will melt you heart.

This year we were able to visit Sarah’s parents and include them in some of the photos. Tim and I have a little trick that we use sometimes with children who are reluctant to get in front of the camera. We let them take a few pictures and then they are usually more willing to have their own picture taken. It backfired a little bit because Charlotte then wanted to take over our job and take all the pictures herself. So now, Sarah and Donald have a few Charlotte creations in their gallery of photos.  Be sure to check out the slideshow at the end.

Nell’s Family

October 26th, 2011

I grew up in a home where we had no pets. My parents had 6 kids, and I don’t doubt that having a dog, cat, or any other living thing probably would have put my mom over the edge. I know it would have done that to me. Tim grew up in a home where [...]

I grew up in a home where we had no pets. My parents had 6 kids, and I don’t doubt that having a dog, cat, or any other living thing probably would have put my mom over the edge. I know it would have done that to me.

Tim grew up in a home where there was always at least one dog, and so of course he wanted one when we had our own children. I resisted for years and years until I finally gave in… reluctantly. Now when we take our Molly for walks I meet a lot of dog owners. I never knew this little social world existed. These people are fiercely loyal to their pets, and have a lot of fun stories to tell.

Back when I first started my business I photographed Kevin and Lori with their previous dog who has since passed away. It was fun to see them again with their new rescue Nell. She’s a sweet dog who was a lot of fun to photograph. They love her to pieces and I can see why. Thank you Kevin and Lori!

This year I am doing something a little different for my Holiday Cards. I have my own storefront on minted.com. Anyone can order, and if you’re a client of mine I will even upload your photo(s) to their site for you to use in your cards at no charge. They have hundreds of beautiful designs. My favorites are the storybook options that let you add a little blurb about what each member of the family is up to. Make sure you use this link:

Waiting for Henry

Whenever I look at these pictures I feel profound gratitude. Last summer Hailey contacted me about getting family portraits when she was to visit from Illinois. She told me she and her husband worked together in their photography business just like Tim and I. She was also a former teacher, and had 4 children just like me. I took  a look at her site and honestly could not believe that she chose me out of the thousands of photographers in Southern California. I am still honored.

I cannot say enough good things about this family. Mom and Dad are amazing, and their children are incredibly sweet, extremely polite, happy, cheerful, smart, and beautiful. In short they are a photographer’s dream.

You can see the wonderful things that Hailey wrote about the experience on her blog here.

My son turned 9 over the summer. He wants nothing more than to make everyone around him laugh with the stories he tells. He has a heart of gold, and it pains him to see someone hurt or upset. Of all my kids he is the first one up in the morning, and the last one to go to sleep at night. He just can’t stop moving. In so many ways he is nothing like me which makes it hard for me to understand him sometimes, and yet he has so many qualities I wish I had. These children of mine keep me on my toes. They are constantly surprising me.

The Importance of Family

October 5th, 2011

Every family that comes to me for portraits wants them for a new reason. Maybe their son is going off to college, or there is a new baby in the family. Some come every year to document their children every step of the way. Often people tell me they haven’t had family portraits in decades. When Sarah called she told me her story, and it reminded me why portraits are important. Her husband Bruce became very ill suddenly and nearly lost his life. When he recovered he told his wife that what he wanted most was a family portrait. I was more than happy to help them out. Tim and I had enjoyed a beautiful evening in Ventura with this family. I hope they have many more family portraits in their future.
