Dress Up For Jamie

November 2nd, 2012

Our Dress up for Jamie event was a huge success. We photographed 58 children, and some adults. Everyone was adorable in their costumes, and best of all, we raised a lot of money to help Jamie with her medical expenses. Thank you for everyone who came out!!

Last September I had the privilege of photographing Janel’s Family as her husband arrived home from a long deployment. It was such a privilege to be there and see the overwhelming happiness as so many families were reunited with their loved ones. After I posted the photos from that day on my blog I got such a large outpouring of kind words and requests to photograph more homecomings. I’m sure you’ll agree with me that Caryn is gorgeous, and her 2 little girls could not be any cuter in their handmade dresses made by mom.

I am still cannot imagine being without my husband for 7 months, especially with such young children. Caryn and all military families have my admiration and gratitude for all that they do. Be sure to scroll to the end for the slideshow.

Everyone bursting with joy and happiness as they welcome their loved one gone for so long. When Janel called asking if I would photograph her husband coming home I jumped at the chance. It was all so new, and so fun to watch as these families gathered for the homecoming. The kids were so excited, the wives were cheering, and the waiting seemed to be killing them all. It was everything I thought it would be and more. I had such a good time putting together these photos for a slideshow. Please don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom and press play. Thank you Janel for letting me be a part of your day. It was a pleasure!

Last year was my first year participating in the worldwide Giving is Awesome movement. I was able to meet and photograph the Kent family during their first ever trip to the beach. This year I am excited to do it again. I would like to do my small part to make a deserving family happy, especially at this time of year. Here are the details:

Think of someone you know who has experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is dealing with an illness, or is selflessly volunteering to help others.  The person should not be able to afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season. Surely you know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family’s spirit, love, and beauty.

You know someone. I guarantee it.

I want to know who they are, and I want to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography — $1025 worth, to be exact. It’s in your power to give them the artwork they deserve this holiday season.

Oh, and the best part? The person who nominates the winner receives a $175 session fee credit. What better reason to show some love could there possibly be?

The rules:

* You cannot nominate yourself, and the person nominated must sincerely be incapable of purchasing my services. (Being unable to make mortgage payments for a two-million-dollar-vacation-home in Paris does not qualify as sincere financial need.)

* The nominee must reside in Los Angeles or Ventura County. Tell me who you know, what they’re experiencing, and why they deserve my artwork. Please include a way to contact both your nominee and yourself as well.

* You must e-mail me the full story: julie@juliecampbellphotography.com

The winner will be announced on Christmas Eve — get nominating! I can’t wait to read all of your entries!

Open your heart to someone this holiday season — and thanks for giving me the opportunity to open mine.

Giving is Awesome

Laura wrote me back in November about her friend Maria and her family. She wanted to nominate her friend’s family for my annual Giving is Awesome session. I’m so glad she did. This family has been through so much in such a short period of time. Here is an exerpt from Laura’s letter to me.

“…. a typical family really, only tragedy keeps landing on this families plate. Tragedy struck only a few months after Ryan and Hailey were born. Hailey began feeling sick with a fever in which doctors passed off as the flu, October 4th 2006. She was in critical condition & was not expected to make it through the night. She was diagnosed with a rare aggressive form of Leukemia ( Infant ALL with the MLL gene) Her twin brother Ryan was not a bone marrow match and in 2007 they had to go with a not positive match to save Hailey’s life. Hailey is now 3 years old but has been on basically isolation her whole life. She is at home with her family and we are grateful everyday for that.

Maria goes through so much everyday taking care of Hailey who can be a little bit crazy due to the medications she is on and also taking care of Ryan who is just as full of energy. The twins hardly get much sleep so Maria hardly gets any sleep and work has been rough.

This family has touched my heart since knowing them in 2006 when the twins were a mere 6 months old. They have become a second family to me and my heart aches everyday when they are going through a rough time. She is a great mom she is like a second mom to me, no matter how tired she is, how stressed out she can get, she is the most strong woman I know. I don’t know how she does it. But she does it. I have never in my life met or respected someone as much as I do her and her family and I hope that if you do choose this family you get to experience the awesomeness of the family that I get to everyday.”

We were able to do our photo session this past week at the beach. It was the twins very first time there, and they were incredibly excited. It was so fun for me to see them experience the water, sea life, and everything the beach offers for the very first time. I’m honored to share this sweet family with you.

givingisawesome900x100It’s Christmas eve, and that means it’s time to announce the 2009 Giving is Awesome recipient.  Thank you everyone who took the time to email me your letter.  I was truly inspired by the love and generosity in your letters.  My heart goes out to all those families fighting cancer, struggling financially, and those fleeing destructive home lives.

I didn’t anticipate how hard it would be to decide. I had to call in Tim to help me decide, and in the end we chose The Martinez family nominated by Elizabeth Smith.  I am very much looking forward to meeting this family, and sharing their portraits with you sometime in the future.

I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.  I hope your holiday is filled to the brim with peace and happiness.  While I celebrate with my family I will be thinking of the children and parents missing a loved one who they can’t be with on Christmas.  May the time pass quickly until you see them again, and may you feel the love of those who you are with right now.

This Fall has been a whirlwind of craziness.  Getting used to a new baby and a record number of photo sessions has really worn me down.  It reminds me of when I was a kid, and I would be playing outside with my neighborhood friends.  I knew it was getting cold and dark, and I was uncomfortable, but I was having so much fun I didn’t want to go in.  Then when it was time for bed that night I crashed from such a long day of playing.  I’ve had a lot of fun, and have enjoyed it all, but I’m ready for bed now.

This session was my Portraits of Love session.  These 3 ladies are missing their soldier who is deployed and away for Christmas.  They will now have some pictures to send to him while he’s away.  I am still so amazed at the sacrifices that our service men and women make.  Of course their families at home pay a huge price too for having them be away.  I complain when Tim goes away on business for 1 week.  I can’t imagine 6 months or a year.
