Decorating with Love

When people come to my house they usually say they thought they would see more photos on the walls. I suffer from a huge case of indecisiveness. I just cannot choose what photos I want to use. What if I take something tomorrow I like better? Then I look at all the technical flaws in my photos and think I can’t possibly hang that up. People will see that huge blown highlight or the excessive grain? It’s a curse I tell you.

I’ve been collecting ideas on Pinterest for how to decorate my home with the photos I love so much. I love the idea of photo galleries. Sometimes it takes more than one image to tell the story. Plus, you can easily switch them out for new ones if you want to.

I love these photo ledges from Pottery Barn.

This nursery is stunning. I’m out of the nursery business myself, but wouldn’t this make an amazing wall for any room?

The extremely talented Kelli France shared this kitchen display. I love it!

This huge canvas caught my eye. I don’t think we think about the  fun and quirky pictures as large canvas worthy, but wouldn’t this be a fun room to eat breakfast in?

This display is simple, but the colors and feel of it just make me happy. It’s unexpected and fun.

I have decided to start small with a new corner of my house each season to focus on. Right now I’m going to work on the wall along the stairs that lead to the second floor. Should I do something like this?

I’m not sure if I’m that quirky. It will more likely look more like this:

or this, but with photographs:

I’ll let you know how it turns out.

My Mom’s sister came out for a visit from Missouri, and it got me thinking about how different she is in so many ways from my mom. How can 2 people who grew up in the same home with the same parents be so different? Then of course I started comparing my sisters and I. Are we that different? Sure we have our differences, but I think we are more similar than different. Then I look at my girls. In a lot of ways they are like night and day. One is very shy, and one never stops talking. One is adventurous and ready to try anything new, while the other one hates change of any kind, and loves predictability. One can sleep for hours and hours while the other one has a hard time sleeping.

I often watch them and try to see little glimpses of myself in them, and yet all I can see is who they are. Their little souls are completely unique, and all their own. It still amazes me that I am the mother of these two perfect little creatures. It is nothing short of a miracle. I worry about both of them, just like my boys. What will become of them as they get older? What path in life will they choose? Am I preparing them to make what I consider the right decisions? Will they look back on their childhood and remember it fondly? Oh I hope so. I’m trying hard.

Books

August 3rd, 2011

Noah asks me to read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See? over and over and over again. He LOVES that book! I love it too. It’s worn out from 4 kids reading it so many times they  have it memorized. My boy… he loves books, and I love that about him.

Philadelphia

We couldn’t have asked for better weather on our day in Philadelphia. It was just gorgeous out as we learned about those early days in our nation’s history. While I love looking back at the photos of our day in Philly, I still find that my favorite photos (at the bottom) have nothing to do [...]

We couldn’t have asked for better weather on our day in Philadelphia. It was just gorgeous out as we learned about those early days in our nation’s history. While I love looking back at the photos of our day in Philly, I still find that my favorite photos (at the bottom) have nothing to do with where we are, and everything to do with who we are.

Late last month we took our 4 kids to Pennsylvania to see my brother and his family. We hadn’t seen them in over 2 years, and we were anxious to spend some time with them again. We loved it there. Everything was so green, and just plain beautiful. I loved the slow, relaxed pace of the town. The kids learned so much about the Amish, the Civil War, and the early colonial days. It was wonderful to see so much history everywhere we turned. We were able to visit Gettysburg, Hershey, Intercourse, Strasburg, Philadelphia, and then we took a 2 day trip to Washington D.C.

Noah was enchanted by a real steam engine.

Gettysburg was nothing like I thought it would be. I pictured a big wide open field where the battle took place. Of course it was much larger, more beautiful, and much more difficult for the soldiers than I ever imagined. We all left with a profound sense of gratitude and respect.

The Last Day

June 15th, 2011

I walked my oldest to school for the last time. I would be lying if I said I didn’t a lump in my throat. I’m pretty sure her first day of Kindergarten was last year. I guess it just feels like it was. We’ve been so fortunate to live within walking distance to our elementary [...]

I walked my oldest to school for the last time. I would be lying if I said I didn’t a lump in my throat. I’m pretty sure her first day of Kindergarten was last year. I guess it just feels like it was. We’ve been so fortunate to live within walking distance to our elementary school. It was comforting knowing my kids were less than 5 minutes away on foot while they were at school.

Next year I’m sending my oldest off to middle school. It’s the same middle school I went to as a kid. I have horrifying memories of the things that went down in the bathrooms, and behind the field in a grove of trees (which no longer exist). I just can’t imagine my sweet little innocent child in that kind of environment. I’ve officially become one of those moms that is afraid to let her child go out into the world. I’m working on it. Until then I’m going to enjoy the long summer days ahead.

Today is a big day. It is my 14 year wedding anniversary. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was only 21, but I felt like I knew it all. Some people told me I was too young to get married. They tried to convince me to go out and enjoy life before I got tied down. I didn’t for one minute consider it. I knew exactly what I was doing. I was young and naive. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but I got this one right. I married the right person for me, and not just for a few years, but for eternity.

Tim is my best friend. He’s a pretty amazing husband. Everyone tells me how wonderful he is, and how much they wish their husbands were like him. I think my own mother loves him more than she loves me. My grandmother calls him a gem, a jewel, and a treasure. If you don’t know my grandmother you need to know she is not easy to impress. I’m still trying to win her over. What makes him so wonderful? He goes out of his way every single day to make my life easier. He works hard at his day job, and makes sure he is there for his kids and his wife whenever we need him in a way that is rare among men.

So yes, I made the best decision of my life to marry Tim. In the last 14 years we’ve gone through a lot. I am no longer that naive 21 year old. I’m older, a little more cynical, and definitely wiser. I am so much more aware of what I want my life to be. Luckily Tim is on the same page. We are trying our hardest every single day to raise our 4 children to be good people. It’s never easy, but it’s always worth it. I’m thankful everyday I have Tim to lean on.

I have a confession to make. Sometimes my kids drive me absolutely crazy. It’s not something I’m proud of, but it’s true. They have been known to argue, whine, talk back, ignore me, fight with one another, and make big huge messes. I feel like a nag all afternoon trying to get them to do their homework, practice the piano, and do their chores. By 8:00 at night I am not sad to say goodnight and tuck them into bed. I’m ready for some quiet time. I’m ready for peace.

I’m pretty sure this is normal, but I wish it wasn’t in my house. I’m not sure that what I wish for is even possible, but I know it can be better. It’s amazing to me how different and unique each one is. They all come from the same gene pool, and yet they are all so very different. Their personalities range from super shy to goofy and loud. I have my neat and tidy child, and my child whose room looks like a bomb went off in it. One is extremely affectionate, and needing to be close to others, and one likes much more personal space and alone time. Meeting all their individual needs seems so daunting at times. I get tired of making so many mistakes. Being a mother is just plain hard. Of course I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I love them all deeply, and NEED them in my life, but I do wish it was a little easier sometimes.

Trouble

I can’t keep my house clean. I try… sort of. It feels like a losing battle every day. These two are a big reason why. They are best buddies as well as partners in crime.
