I will never ever get bored of photographing newborns. Yes, it takes a lot of patience because you have to wait for them to be ready. You can’t rush it or force it. They are the boss and you follow their command, with a few little tricks to help you on the way.

I know there are hundreds if not thousands of great newborn photographers. I am always amazed by the incredible talent out there, and I don’t claim to be anywhere near the best. When I’m photographing a newborn I like to keep in mind what I would want as a mother. I know that a few years down the road I’ll look back at my children’s photos as a newborn and see the first glimpses of who they have become. I’ll want to see what they looked like, what their facial expressions were, how skinny/chubby/tiny they were. I won’t care as much about cute little hats, fancy backdrops, floors, or props. I just want to see them, and remember their sweet smell, the way their soft hair felt on my cheek as I snuggled with them on the couch, and the hours and hours I spent watching their faces as I fed them. That is the reason why I try to keep simplicity in my photography. The baby is the star. Their beauty is what is the most important. I hope the people that come to me to capture their little ones will always treasure those first portraits of their babies, stopping time in a small way for them to remember their own star.

Little E is a photographer’s dream. She’s beautiful, gentle, dainty, peaceful and precious beyond words. She’s about 4 months old now, but here she was at a only 1 week old.

Handsome and sweet little Blake makes me smile. His perfect little serious face, that adorable chin, and his sweet temperament make him hard to resist. He is the 5th child from this family. What a blessing he is!

Favorites of 2011

2011 was a great year for Julie Campbell Photography. I met so many new people, and saw familiar faces from past years. In the past week or so I went through all of my sessions from 2011. I pulled out my favorites to update my website with. I thought about each and every client, the funny things that happened at their session, the changes in their lives, the reasons they wanted portraits this year, and how honored I feel to be a small part of their lives.

I wish I could give them all large gifts of my gratitude, but it’s just not possible. I see these photos and think how nice it would be to gift at least one or two of them with an enlargement. So here’s my idea. I want YOU to vote and let me know which one you think I should give to one of my clients. Which one is your favorite? It doesn’t matter why it’s your favorite. It could be you like the facial expressions, mood of the photo, the lighting, or the choice of clothing.

Henry

Little Henry makes me happy. Isn’t he adorable? I will never tire of looking at those wise eyes staring back at me. I often wonder what little babies are thinking about. I imagine them to be so much wiser than we give them credit for. They are truly a blessing.

The little details are always my favorite thing to capture in a newborn session. The squishy lips change so quickly.

Henry was so lucky to be born into such a loving family. They are wonderful! You probably recognize them from this maternity session.

We can’t forget the ones who were there before baby.

I should have shared this long before now that it’s so close to Christmas. Henry was a Halloween baby.

Those gorgeous eyes again…

This little guy is just perfect. He is incredibly handsome, and so sweet and cuddly. His big sister was one of my newborns a couple of years ago. I am always so honored to be called upon to capture these fleeting first days of a baby’s life.
